March 2020 Newsletter

March 9, 2020 Off By Oban Sailing Club

Dear Members ….

February raced by with no newsletter from me, so it might appear that your club is in some form of winter recess; far from it. Monday Mayhem has been running every other Monday evening, we have shorebased theory courses underway, the safety boats are back on the water, the dinghies are out of the shed, UHI Wind and Wave Club are out in their Fireflies, Argyll College students are making use of the club for their Maritime Skills courses, ….. So far from a recess.

Your handbook will be with you soon with the full calendar of events. In advance of that I can let you know the first events will be ….

Keelboats: Saturday 4th April for the 1st Spring Series Race (1400 start)

Dinghies: Sunday 5th April for the 1st Spring Series Race (1400 start)

Monday Mayhem: Monday 6th April on the water!!

Launch Supper & Quiz: Saturday 18th April

You’ll remember from an email to you last week that we’re putting together a menu of training for 2020. We’ll get that sent out when it’s ready. I also made a plea for a member to volunteer to help with the administration of the training. OSC members are brilliant – within 15 minutes I had a reply from a member who will be a huge help to the training team.

Two other areas we could really do with help are

1) Assisting behind the bar occasionally

2) Help with organising social events

Neither needs much experience or time commitment but your help will be hugely beneficial to us. Drop us an email osc@obansailingclub.org if you can help.

Other areas where the voluntary contribution of club members has been superb have been in the IT side of things and building maintenance. One of our members has ensured we have a new functional website that integrates the club calendar, membership payments and hopefully the booking of training courses. We also have members taking care of our social media accounts.

In the clubhouse we recently discovered a chronic leak in the kitchen. Members have spent a long weekend taking up the floor, fixing the plumbing and renewing floor timbers. We’re aiming to have a brand new kitchen installed by the end of the month which will be a huge improvement on what we had. So thanks to everyone who is giving their time and skills.

If you haven’t renewed your membership yet – please visit the club website www.obansailingclub.org/renew/ where we’ve made it really easy for you.

All for now
