Events update June 2021

June 9, 2021 Off By Oban Sailing Club

Hello everyone.

I wanted to send out a few reminders and updates for sailing events.

Round Shuna Race (Sunday 29th August)

You may think I’m getting ahead of myself here but I wanted to share with you a change to our Sailing Program. The Round Shuna Race (in Loch Melfort) is a really fun pursuit race organised by Clyde Corinthian Yacht Club and very popular with members. When the Handbook was published we didn’t have confirmation of the date and so went with the first weekend in September as per previous years. It has now been confirmed for 29th August so please put that one in your diary – always a good weekend away.

Revised Sailing Program

The revision to the Sailing Program is therefore:

Sat Aug 28: Feeder Race (Oban to Croabh Haven) – start time to be confirmed

Sun Aug 29: Round Shuna Race

Sat Sept 4: Oban Boat Club Cup

Sun Sept 5: Wee Peaks Race for dinghies

Dinghy Race on Thursday 10th June

There is silverware to be won by dinghy sailors on Thursday with the “Port Beag Plate” and the “Senior Plate”. In a previous email I indicated that our dinghy racing would move to a Class split based on experience to which I have received a number of positive comments. However, the fleet for these trophy races is split by age:

Port Beag Plate: Open to Junior members aged 17 or under on 1st April 2021

Senior Plate: Everybody else

Have a go and have fun…..

Keelboat Program

There is a bit of a hiatus in the keelboat program for the next couple of weekends, unless you fancy a trip up to Fort William for the Lochaber Regatta 19/20 June. Perhaps this is an opportunity for some gentle cruising. Tuesday night racing in the bay is still continuing though.

Clubhouse Bar

Sociability is important for any club or organisation. I’ve had a few queries about opening the clubhouse bar after events. As you will know, we’re following RYA Scotland guidance on all aspects of our operation. The overriding approach is one of minimising risk. Our understanding is that to open the bar we have to operate it under full hospitality guidelines – which as you can appreciate will not be trivial. This adds a considerable burden to volunteers who manage the bar; also the risk of stock going out of date and the club incurring wastage. So for now we will unfortunately keep the bar closed but I am seeking further guidance and advice from RYA Scotland to see what can be done.

Feedback from you

Everytime I send one of these notices out there are always one or two responses with comments or suggestions. These are really helpful to make sure we’re doing the right things for you. Please keep them coming.

all for tonight
